Retrograde ejaculation - Retrograde ejaculation Symptom, Cause, Treatment
In males, retrograde ejaculation occurs when the fluid to be ejaculated , which would normally exit via the urethra , is redirected towards the urinary bladder . Normally the sphincter of the bladder contracts and the sperm goes to the urethra towards the area of least pressure. Common causes of retrograde ejaculation include diabetes, spinal cord injuries, certain drugs, and some surgical operations (including major abdominal or pelvic surgery one of the most common causes is transurethral resection of the prostate). Retrograde ejaculation can be caused by diabetes, prostate or bladder surgery, spinal cord injuries, or taking certain medications, like high blood pressure or mood altering medications. Signs of this condition include having cloudy urine after ejaculating, little to no semen during ejaculation and possibly infertility. Retrograde ejaculation is a common side effect of medications such as Tamsulosin that are used to relax the muscles of the urinary tract for various purposes. However, most of these drugs can increase heart rate and blood pressure, which can be dangerous in men with high blood pressure or heart disease. Diagnosis is usually by way of a urinalysis performed on a urine specimen that is obtained shortly after ejaculation which will have an abnormal level of sperm within it.
Symptom of Retrograde ejaculation

- Little or no semen discharged from the urethra in conjunction with the male sexual climax (during ejaculation)
- Men with retrograde ejaculation have a very low volume of ejaculated semen.

Causes of Retrograde ejaculation
The common causes of Retrograde ejaculation :
- Surgery involving the urethra
- Diabetes
- Side effect of certain medications, including some psychiatric drugs
- operations involving the abdomen, pelvis, or genitals
- multiple sclerosis , a progressive neurological disorder that can disrupt nerve pathways to the bladder neck
Treatment of Retrograde ejaculation
- Retrograde ejaculation caused by diabetes or following genitourinary tract surgery may be responsive to the use of epinephrine-like drugs (such as pseudoephedrine or imipramine).

- Some of the medications used to relax the bladder neck can cause arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats.
- The major problem when analysing the studies was the uneven methodological quality of the original articles and the difficulties presented by different drugs and dosages, equipment and techniques, along with different criteria for success.
