Catatonic Schizophrenia - Catatonic Schizophrenia Symptom, Cause, Treatment

Immobility, bizarre postures, excessive purposeless movements and mutism characterize the disease.Catatonic schizophrenia is characterized by auditory and visual hallucinations and most typically the presence of bizarre motor activity.

  1. Catatonic stupor (marked decrease in reactivity to the environment and/or reduction in spontaneous movements and activity) or mutism.
  2. Catatonic negativism (an apparent motiveless resistance to all instructions or attempts to be moved).
  3. Catatonic rigidity (maintenance of a rigid posture against efforts to be moved).
  4. Catatonic excitement (excited motor activity, apparently purposeless and not influenced by external stimuli).
  5. Catatonic posturing (voluntary assumption of inappropriate or bizarre postures).

Symptoms of Catatonic Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia normally appears in men when they are in their teens, and in women in their twenties.Catatonic schizophrenia can cause peculiar behaviors such as:

  • Sitting or standing in unusual positions (posturing).
  • Allowing another person to move your arms and legs into different positions (waxy flexibility).
  • Sitting without moving for long periods of time (stupor).
  • Having episodes of being extremely active but with no purpose (catatonic excitement).

Causes of Catatonic Schizophrenia

There are three main causes of Catatonic Schizophrenia are limbic system, the frontal cortex, and the basal ganglia.of Brain imaging of living people and studies of the brains of deceased persons point to the limbic system as the potential siteof pathology .The neurotransmitter dopamine is believed to play a key part and most anti-psychotic drugs used to treat schizophrenia act on dopamine and its receptors.In a Catatonic Schizophrenia Disease a people's believed that all subtypes of schizophrenia have the same origin.Two of the most important neurotransmitters associated with depression are norepinephrine and serotonin

Treatment of Catatonic Schizophrenia

Treatment usually involves a combination of anti-psychotic drugs and therapy. The goal of therapy is to help the patient to perform normal everyday tasks. The treatment of Catatonic Schizophrenia are includes
