Neurasthenia - Neurasthenia Symptom, Cause, Treatment
Neurasthenia is characterized by general lassitude, irritability, lack of concentration, worry, and hypochondria and also known Primary Neurasthenia, Cardiac Neurosis, Chronic Asthenia, Da Costa's Syndrome, Effort Syndrome, Functional Cardiovascular Disease, Soldier's Heart and Subacute Asthenia. . Beard's definition of "neurasthenia" described a condition with symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, headache, impotence, neuralgia and depression. It was explained as being a result of exhaustion of the central nervous system's energy reserves, which Beard attributed to civilization. Physicians of the Beard way of thinking associated neurasthenia with the stresses of urbanization and the pressures placed on the intellectual class by the increasingly competitive business environment. Typically, it was associated with upper class individuals in sedentary employment.
Symptoms of Neurasthenia
The symptoms just enumerated I have termed the primary or essential symptoms of neurasthenia; all other symptoms are secondary or adventitious symptoms. The sensory symptoms consist, first, of vague fatigue sensations, generalized in character. Neurasthenia's symptoms included:
- General lassitude
- Irritability
- Lack of concentration
- Worry
- Hypochondria
- Feeling tired easily
- Lack of energy
- Inability to complete tasks
- Nervous dyspepsia
- Insomnia
- Hysteria
- H ypochondria
- A sthma
- Sick-headache
- Skin rashes
- Hayfever
- Premature baldness
- Inebrity
- Hot and cold flashes
- Nervous exhaustion
- Brain-collapse, or forms of elementary insanity
Causes of Neurasthenia
Neurasthenia is a mental disorder caused by emotional stress or anxiety. It is not caused by any underlying physical (organic) problems even though physical discomfort can be present. The cause of Neurasthenia remain unknown however like most disorders, certain predisposing factors may play an important part, chief of which may be mentioned heredity factors, occupation (high stress occupations), age (tends to occurs between 20 and 55 years of age), and sex (predominantly see in males).
Treatment of Neurasthenia
No physical treatment has been established. If other mental or physical disorders are present, these may require treatment.
