Atypical Depression Information

What is Atypical Depression?

Atypical Depression type of depression usually follows an interpersonal rejection by a lover, boss, or close friend. People with atypical depression tend to overeat and oversleep, whereas people with melancholia often are characterized by weight loss and insomnia. Atypical depression is a type of depression that overwhelms an individual almost to the point of emotional paralysis. Oftentimes, atypical depression is set off by perceived as well as real rejections so that even a constructive criticism is taken as a personal affront. If you have atypical depression, you may feel as though your body is so heavy you can't lift your head or walk.

Atypical depression often follows rejections by close friends, co-workers or family members. Someone with atypical depression may be able to enjoy some particular circumstances where as a classically depressed individual suffers from pervasive distress.  With respect to older treatments, atypical depression responds well to MAO inhibitors and not as well to tricyclics.
